“Sometimes the best things come in small packages.” I remember my mother saying that when I was a child. Years later, I learned the song Grano de Mostaza (“Mustard Seed”) here on the border—it reminds us that faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains.
This truth was evident when a team of six came to Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care (YLM) and made a big, lasting impact on both the mission and a family outside El Paso. Three husband-and-wife teams from Branson, Missouri, and Lakewood, Colorado, returned to YLM to serve on the U.S. side of the border. Originally, they had planned to build a home in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, as they’ve done for years. However, with fewer team members than expected, they and YLM developed alternative service projects—and what a blessing that became!
Sergio and Michelle, a couple living outside El Paso, faced serious challenges. Michelle’s health issues required hospital visits, and a leaking water heater left their already fragile trailer home unlivable. The team stepped in to help them return home by renovating their bathroom and bedroom.
Back at YLM’s 4.2-acre campus, the six-person team worked tirelessly, reminding us of Gideon’s 300 men defeating the Midianites (Judges 7). Dividing tasks, they strengthened the mission in ways that will benefit future servant events and visitors to YLM and San Pablo Lutheran Church.
Some restored the beautiful custom-made wood door at San Pablo’s entrance. Two years ago, a team member had hand-crafted and installed this door, but El Paso’s “Sun City” heat had taken its toll. Each year, the team lovingly refinishes it—a labor of love that reflects their devotion to God and the congregation who worships there.
In the dorms, the team refinished a donated bookcase, organizing Bibles, games, and crafts used by visiting groups. They repainted the meeting room, refinished table lamps, and gave the space a warm, welcoming feel.
They also deep-cleaned rooms and bathrooms, laundered linens, made beds, and organized the “holy kitchen,” sorting utensils, pots, and pans for future teams.
Perhaps their most demanding task was installing three brand-new showers in the dorm bathrooms—complete with new flooring, tile, plumbing, and mold-resistant drywall. Three more showers remain for future teams to complete—an open invitation to anyone ready to serve!
YLM truly is YOUR LUTHERAN MISSION. This faithful team from Missouri and Colorado demonstrated that whether large or small, every group can make a difference. Opportunities abound—on both sides of the border and right here on campus—to serve God, care for others, and help sustain this special window of heaven on the border.
Thank you to all who make YLM your mission—for the glory of God and the furthering of His Kingdom.
