There is a sense of momentum rising in Chihuahua, and Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care is excited for what God is unfolding next. For the past year, Rev. Misael Tovar –pastor of Iglesia Luterana Gloria Dei in Chihuahua City and Misión Luterana San Esteban in San Lorenzo –has been working closely with the Mexico Lutheran Synod (SLM) to bring these independent congregations into full affiliation. This partnership is opening doors for support, training, and long‑term growth that will strengthen the churches already established and help plant new ones in the years ahead.
The process has involved several visits from SLM leadership, including President Rev. Omar Ramírez and Vice President Rev. Neftalí García. Their time in Chihuahua gave them the chance to meet the members of Gloria Dei and San Esteban, listen to their hopes, and see firsthand the faithfulness of these congregations. They also visited Divino Salvador, a newer mission site overseen by Deacon Alfredo Holguín. These visits offered a clear picture of the needs, opportunities, and potential within this region; insight which will guide the support the SLM provides moving forward.
For Pastor Tovar, this new chapter is especially meaningful. After completing remedial coursework through the Lutheran Institute of Mexico, he will be formally incorporated into the SLM this year. This step will connect him to ongoing pastoral support, theological resources, and a network of fellow workers in the Gospel. It also strengthens the congregations he serves, giving them a broader church body to walk alongside them.
Pastor Tovar’s journey has been shaped by both calling and circumstance. He completed his theological training through the Springfield Theology Education by Extension program in the 1990s, then spent years working as a psychologist specializing in addiction and developmental challenges. Ten years ago, when his father, Rev. Martín Tovar, could no longer continue in ministry due to declining health, Pastor Misael stepped in to shepherd both congregations. Since then, he has faithfully guided Gloria Dei and San Esteban through seasons of growth, challenge, and renewed mission.
Now, with the partnership between YLM and the SLM deepening, the future feels full of possibility. Together, these ministries are preparing to support established churches, encourage new mission starts, and nurture the next generation of church leaders in Chihuahua. The work ahead is hopeful and energizing: more training, more collaboration, more opportunities for believers to grow in faith and service.
God is moving in Chihuahua, and we are grateful to be part of the story. As these congregations take their next steps, YLM remains committed to walking with them; supporting pastors, strengthening missions, and celebrating every new door God opens.
