Where Credit is Due

The team met Adelina and her three children after the Sunday worship at San Lucas

On the last night of their stay, the leader of Our Savior Lutheran Church from Minot, ND shared how humbling and beautiful it was to see and hear Adelina, single mother of three kids receiving the house their team of six came to Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care (YLM) to build in Anapra, always praising God first for the blessing of a home for her and her children.

Seven year old Angél helped bring studs for the framing of the walls

Our Savior’s adult mission team has been coming for over nine years, previously bringing teams with teenagers before for a few years. While their adult mission team has varied in numbers from year to year, one thing they’ve always provided, which is the determination to not only complete their week’s goal of building a house (or two), but of sharing God’s love through friendship, laughter, and conversations with those they’re blessed to serve.

This small team of six started with five on the first day, their sixth member unable to join them until the middle of their mission week. Considering several of the team members have experience in construction due to their day to day career, when their sixth member texted them at end of day one to leave something for him to do, everyone laughed because they knew he was being serious with this request.

With all of their talents and skills brought into the building of this house for Adelina and her children, it became a daily gift for the team to witness Adelina thanking God for what was taking place, from the framing of walls to the installation of the roof, the securing of windows and doors to the testing of electrical outlets and light bulbs.

“What a humbling reminder it was for us,” one of the team members shared, “To be reminded the abilities and skills we have acquired are thanks to God and for God’s glory.”

Adelina lovingly prepared a delicious meal to celebrate her family’s new home

At the end of the week, Adelina blessed this team with her own skills and talents, providing them with a delicious and bountiful meal of grilled chicken and sausage, salads and spaghetti, along with her loving hospitality as they all gathered outside her house after the dedication to celebrate.

Day five was all about sanding and celebrating for everyone!

“You could see how joyful and satisfied she was at providing us with this delicious meal,” Bonnie shared on the drive to their traditional dinner place Friday night, “But the praise was always given to God by her and we were blessed to be able to do the same.”

“She gave credit where credit was due,” another one of the team members spoke up, the rest of them agreeing as well.

The joy of being children of God was experienced by this team of six through the opportunity to not only provide a little house for this family of four, but also have Adelina and her children, and her 7-year-old son Angél, work alongside them to help with the process of answering their prayer for a home of their own.
