The Fruit of Education

Over twenty-five teenage girls and women received the information on their bodies and how to care for them

The last week of January and first week of February, several women from the Juarez/Chihuahua mission-churches received training from a nurse practitioner who served through Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care (YLMHC) to bring feminine hygiene care kits along with the Days for Girls International curriculum. These women saw the possibilities and quickly began to organize and work towards hosting workshops for women and teenage girls in their communities.

Women at one of the Chihuahua missions receiving hygiene kits after the workshop taught by Erika Tovar

Erika Tovar, wife to the pastor of the Chihuahua mission-churches, taught several women on the physiology and care of their bodies. She shared how it was an impactful time, with one of the women taking the information into the secondary school where she teaches.

“Word of mouth is the way others find out about what is taking place at our two mission-churches,” Erika shared while she and Pastor Tovar were in El Paso just a few days ago, “We’ve had a couple of new Tarahumara women come to our church, and we’re now planning for a second workshop.”

At La Santa Biblia in Anapra, a workshop of over 25 women and teenage girls was hosted the last Wednesday of March. Information on the care of their bodies, along with the prevention of pregnancy and human trafficking, was received before they were given a kit along with their food baskets.

Women at Cristo Rey, most of them older, sat through a workshop after the Palm Sunday service, and were happy to receive kits

After the Palm Sunday service at Cristo Rey in downtown Juarez, several women stayed to listen to the Days for Girls curriculum before receiving their hygiene kits. These women, several of them older and dealing with menopause and incontinence, were grateful for the reusable feminine pads included in the kits.

A Servant Event team from Lincoln, NE brought down more hygiene kits to be distributed among the mission-churches

More kits were sent down to YLMHC by Common Threads Ministry in Lincoln, NE, along with several extra Spanish flip charts and specially marked measuring tapes, to distribute among the mission-churches. The Mexico deaconesses are working to schedule more workshops, with an upcoming one in San Lucas (Anapra) and another in San Esteban, located in the small Chihuahua village of San Lorenzo.

Through this practical and necessary information and resource, the mission-churches believe there will be many opportunities to share the Good News of a Savior who created men and women in His image, and deeply loves each of them.
