This April, Mariachi San Pablo (MSP) traveled across the country to Brandon, Florida, to join Immanuel Lutheran Church in celebrating two joyful milestones: five years of Hispanic ministry in their congregation and 100 years of Hispanic ministry within the LCMS. The invitation marked a meaningful moment for both MSP and the growing multicultural community at Immanuel.
Eight MSP members flew with their instruments and mariachi trajes (suits), greeted with warmth and enthusiasm by Pastor Miguel Sanabria and the church’s leadership. Their welcome reflected the spirit of a congregation that has experienced remarkable renewal. Just seven years ago, Immanuel was facing the possibility of closing its doors. Everything changed when they opened their building to a small Hispanic congregation in need of a home. What began as hospitality soon grew into a shared mission.
Five years ago, Immanuel made Hispanic ministry a central part of its identity and called Pastor Sanabria to lead it. Since then, the congregation has blossomed into a vibrant community representing cultures from Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, and many countries across Central and South America. This blend of traditions, languages, and stories has brought new life and joy to the church, shaping a ministry that reflects the beauty of Christ’s diverse body.
MSP’s visit became a highlight of the celebration. The group played for two worship services, filling the sanctuary with familiar hymns and mariachi harmonies that resonated deeply with the congregation. The celebration that followed showcased the richness of Latin American culture. More than twenty children arrived dressed in traditional outfits, and booths representing various countries offered food samples, cultural displays, and opportunities to learn about each nation’s customs. The atmosphere was festive, warm, and filled with gratitude for what God is doing through this ministry.
On Monday morning, MSP led music for Immanuel’s chapel service, where the congregation once again responded with enthusiasm. The joy expressed through mariachi-style worship created a sense of unity that transcended backgrounds and languages. For MSP, the experience was a blessing—an opportunity to witness firsthand how God is using Hispanic ministry to strengthen and expand the mission of the Church.
The impact of the visit was immediate. Immanuel’s leaders extended an invitation for MSP to return and are already exploring opportunities for a future Florida tour involving neighboring congregations. Their eagerness reflects the strong connections formed during the visit and the growing desire to share mariachi-style Gospel ministry more widely.
MSP now prepares for its next journey—traveling to St. Louis, Missouri, to participate in the LCMS Multi-Ethnic Symposium for the third consecutive year. With each trip, MSP continues to build relationships, encourage congregations, and share the Gospel through music that speaks to the heart.
