Bringing Light to the Border

For the first time, a team from Messiah Lutheran Church in Boerne, TX came to serve alongside Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care, bringing willing hands and open hearts to the campus and surrounding community. Led by Mark Giardinelli, the team arrived ready to serve wherever needed, both in El Paso and across the border.

The week began quickly. On Sunday afternoon, following worship, part of the team stepped straight into demolition work at YLM’s Thrift Shop. Under the guidance of Doug Camp, walls came down and the space was cleared to prepare for much-needed improvements. What started as demolition soon turned into rebuilding. Throughout the week, the team worked on restoring the ceiling in both the Thrift Shop and Music Room, installing new lighting and helping bring fresh life to spaces used regularly by the community.

While some focused on campus projects, others served throughout El Paso. On Tuesday, the team visited a local nursing home where residents often receive few visitors. Time was spent sitting with residents, listening, sharing conversation, and offering presence.

The group led a short devotion, sang “Thy Word,” and worked on a simple craft together. Quilts made by the Messiah Quilters were shared with residents, each one received with gratitude. While some moments were difficult, the visit brought encouragement to residents and meaningful reflection for the team.

Later in the week, on Thursday, another group visited a rescue center serving individuals experiencing homelessness. Team members handed out hygiene kits and spent time praying with those who asked for prayer. Conversations were simple and sincere, offering care through listening and compassion.

The final day of the trip took the team across the border into Cd. Juarez for Three Kings Day, celebrated during Epiphany. At La Santa Biblia Lutheran Mission in Anapra, children gathered to celebrate through games and fellowship. Several team members helped distribute toys and books donated by Messiah Lutheran Church. Laughter and movement filled the space as children played together and enjoyed the day.

Throughout the week, the team from Messiah Lutheran Church served in many places and in many ways. From construction and repairs to visits, prayer, and shared time, their presence reflected God’s love through action. By serving both on campus and beyond, the team brought care where it was needed and returned home grateful for the opportunity to serve together through YLM.

At YLM, we believe acts of kindness change lives.

That’s why part of our mission includes coming alongside families facing physical and spiritual needs –both in El Paso and in communities across the border in Mexico. By partnering with local organizations, cross-border churches, and ministries, we can bring God’s tangible love, mercy, and grace through Word and Deed.
