The continued work done through Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care’s (YLM) Emergency Food Ministry is essential for many in El Paso communities suffering from food insecurity. Continued partnerships with organizations such as El Pasoans Fighting Hunger, Orphan Grain Train, as well as churches and individuals, close to 150 families in El Paso communities have been able to receive supplemental food baskets on Saturday mornings.
Last month, YLM welcomed back the Delta Company from Ft. Bliss. Over twenty men and women, and some of their children, arrived at 6am and quickly put together food baskets, filling them with donations received the day prior. Pallets of potatoes were quickly separated and bagged to add to the boxes. Laughter and camaraderie were an indication of the good time everyone was enjoying as they worked together towards a common goal.
Recently, food pantries throughout the city have seen a decrease in the amount of food available for them to distribute. El Pasoans Fighting Hunger works to provide food donations to several dozen food banks, YLM’s included, and have reported a drop in donations received. While YLM continues operating their Food Pantry Drive-Thru, serving anywhere between 115-150 families each Saturday, they have also noticed a decrease. Ingenuity and careful planning ensure everyone who comes through receives a food box.
You can become a partner in this crucial effort of relieving food insecurity in El Paso by donating towards YLM’s Emergency Food Program or organizing a YLM food drive of non-perishable food items at your place of work, school, or church. You can also serve by joining us on Saturday mornings, assembling food boxes and loading up vehicles of those seeking hope in their need.
