The cherished tradition of posadas once again brought warmth and joy to the mission churches partnering with Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care (YLM) this Christmas season. Held at San Pablo Lutheran Church in El Paso, Texas, and across the border at Iglesias Luteranas Santisima Trinidad and San Pedro y San Pablo in the KM30 community, these celebrations united families and congregations in a beautiful retelling of the nativity story.
A posada re-enacts Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem, where they sought lodging on the night of Jesus’ birth. Children play a central role, dressing in costume as Mary, Joseph, angels, and shepherds. With lit candles and lively singing, participants go from house to house—or room to room—seeking a place for the holy couple to stay. The final stop leads to a joyous welcome as everyone gathers for prayer, music, and fellowship.
For these mission churches, the posada is more than a reenactment; it’s a reflection of faith and community. In humble yet heartfelt celebrations, congregants come together to honor the birth of Christ and strengthen their bonds as a family of believers.
The evening’s joy continues with a festive yet simple feast. Attendees savor traditional treats like buñuelos—crispy, sugar-dusted fried pastries—and champurrado, a rich, chocolatey drink made with masa. The warm flavors of these delights complement the cozy, familial atmosphere.
This year, Santisima took the opportunity to distribute the Christmas toys received through YLM, capturing the smiles and joy in the faces of the children of their community. At San Pablo, the excitement of breaking the piñata and receiving their bolos (candy bags) was part of the on-going holiday celebrations.
For many, these posadas are a precious reminder of God’s love and provision. Despite humble means, the mission churches create an atmosphere rich in joy, gratitude, and faith. At YLM’s mission churches, posadas are more than a holiday tradition; they’re a living testimony to the Gospel, reminding everyone of the light and hope that came into the world on that holy night.
