Mariachi San Pablo of Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care’s (YLM) Adelante Ministries was invited to join Concordia University -Texas (CTX) for their 2nd annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration. Members of Mariachi San Pablo made the ten-hour road trip to Austin, with one of their members meeting them there, as she is a college student at a university in San Antonio.
Mariachi San Pablo has been traveling for over twenty years to perform at churches, conferences, conventions, and events such as this one. For the new members of the group, the youngest being eight, this kind of travel is not new, as their parents are long-term members of Mariachi San Pablo.
The group of eleven played at several different locations of the CTX campus throughout the day. Joining in on their daily chapel services, this beloved and unique music group played several favorite hymns, such as Seek Ye First and a variation of the Lord’s Prayer, which are arraigned especially for the mariachi style they are known for.
After chapel, Mariachi San Pablo played a few more songs outside, among them Alabaré, which is a favorite for many who know Mariachi San Pablo. During the lunch hour, these musicians played a variety of songs, from traditional hymns to contemporary worship songs. They also played several popular mariachi songs.
“We did a little bit of everything,” Miguel, director of Mariachi San Pablo, shared afterwards, “It’s always a lot of fun to bring this kind of Gospel sharing to people.”
It’s always a joy for those who get to hear Mariachi San Pablo, and for those who are part of this only Lutheran mariachi group, the joy doubles, for they not only get to play the music they love, but they also get to share the Gospel while doing it.
