HEARTS FOR MISSION

Back in the 1990s, when Jon and Christine were just middle school students, they embarked on an incredible journey of service with their church. Through Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care (YLM), they ventured on mission trips to Mexico, igniting a passion for serving God and others that would span decades. Fast forward thirty years, and the spirit of service, and love for YLM, burns bright within the Drieling family, now a beautiful tapestry of love and devotion that includes their five children.

Their story is one of generational service, as they continue to walk the path of mission and work side by side, along with their growing family. From their eldest, Liam, who was just a toddler when he took his first steps on the mission field, to their youngest, Eoin, recently welcomed into the world, they feel the loving embrace of an extended family built through missional service.

Christine fondly recalls Liam’s first mission trip, unsure of what he could do at such a young age. Yet, in his innocence and boundless love, Liam spent his days spreading joy through the simple act of giving hugs to all children he encountered. “God has a calling for my children to love and serve Him and others,” Christine reflected as she shared this story, “I learned in watching Liam there is no age limit to serving others.”

At fifteen, Liam is an eager young man, seeking new ways to help others. Last December, he and his family spent a month at YLM, enthusiastic and willing to dedicate days to serving others. Together, they dove into several different projects, from assembling bunk bed frames to distributing food to families in need on Saturday mornings.

Years old tile from the vestry and sound booth of San Pablo Lutheran Church, was replaced with vinyl flooring. Three-year-old Xochitl helped her big brothers and sister paint the inside French doors of the church, which were installed by a Servant Event team back in October.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of their service, there were moments of pure joy and celebration for the Drieling family. They joined in on Christmas festivities, with their children playing integral roles in the nativity re-enactments and musical performances. Their presence brought joy and laughter to the YLM community, a testament to the enduring bonds they’ve forged over the years.

It wasn’t all work and no play for them, though. There were many moments of camaraderie and fun. One evening on their last week at YLM, the Drieling children came out to find the RV field turned into an obstacle course for a “nerf gun battle”. Members of San Pablo brought their children and teenagers, and amid the running and laughing, friendships were forged, and memories made, leaving indelible marks on all who participated.

Amid busy schedules, Jon and Christine ensured that their newest family member, baby Eoin, be baptized into the family of faith. This was a beautiful miracle witnessed by their YLM family, three of whom stood as godparents -more evidence to deep bonds formed.

As their time at YLM ended, plans were made for their return to assist on an upcoming renovation project -what beautiful commitment shown by this family of seven! Before leaving, all five kids came into the YLM office to give their monetary and stuffed animal donations, hugging everyone before saying their good-byes It was agreed by all the best gift they gave was a legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering faith that will inspire many for generations to come.
