Epiphany at Kilometro 30

Pastor Hernandez led a simple yet powerful message on the manifestation of God’s love in Jesus

On Epiphany day, a small group of people gathered at the house where the members of Iglesia Luterana San Pedro y San Pablo meet, studying the manifestation of God’s love in Jesus Christ.  Their simple celebration consisted of a Rosca de Reyes (Kings’ Cake) and champurrado (a Mexican style hot chocolate), with gifts for the children present, but in the middle of it all, the sweetest gift they received was learning Jesus came for them as well.

This small church body has been a mission-outreach for Iglesia Luterana Santisima Trinidad, one of Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care’s (YLM) mission-partners in Mexico, for several years.  Recently, they hosted a water clinic through YLM, where MOST Ministries’ mission team from Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church brought in 20 water filters along with health and hygiene education.  The owner of the house where they meet opened the doors of her home to the mission team from Our Father Lutheran Church in Centennial, Colorado, where they served 300 hot meals the Saturday after Thanksgiving Day.

Everyone enjoyed traditional Kings’ Cake and Mexican Chocolate

Through their partnership with YLM, Pastor Jose Hernandez from Santisima Trinidad has been working hard to bring the Word of God to the people in the rural community of KM 30.  Through teaching and music, seeds are being planted and church ministry is slowly growing.

“They have a hunger for God’s Word,” Pastor Hernandez shared in regards to San Pedro y San Pablo’s small church, “I make weekly trips out here to instruct them on baptism and confirmation.  They are eager to learn, to grow in their faith.  Even though they have so many physical needs –majority of KM 30 doesn’t have running water and parts have no electricity or proper shelter –this small church is concerning itself with what they can do as the body of Christ.”

The church is small but working on advancing the Gospel in KM 30

The small church body is excited at the coming opportunity to reach out to their neighbors with simple acts of kindness through the help of YLM.  “We have several families in desperate need of shelter,” one of the members, Cecy, shared during the Thanksgiving celebration held in November, “We’re so happy there’s a mission team coming to build a house in March, and a few more over the summer.  We are so grateful for their dedication to making the trip out to KM 30 to help our neighbors in this crucial way so we can share Jesus alongside them.”

San Pedro y San Pablo may be small but it is mightily working on advancing the Word of God within their families, all the while reaching out to the poverty-stricken community of Kilometro 30.
