DEACONESS INTENSIVE IN MEXICO CITY

With the goal to strengthen Christian leadership and service in Mexico, a group of women from across Mexico recently gathered at the Centro de Lutero in Mexico City to participate in an intensive deaconess course. Organized to equip women with theological knowledge and practical skills for ministry, this program is a significant step toward expanding the reach of the Lutheran Church in Mexico and its mission to serve others in Christ’s name.

Among the attendees were two dedicated lay leaders from Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care’s (YLM) partnering mission-churches. Their participation reflects their commitment to growing in faith and service. These women, Michelle Lira and Guillermina Serrano, joined a dozen others from various regions of Mexico, united by a shared calling to deepen their understanding of Scripture and their roles in ministry.

The deaconess course, held over several days, offered a rigorous and enriching curriculum. Participants delved into topics such as biblical theology, the history and role of deaconesses in the church, pastoral care, and practical ministry strategies. Sessions were led by experienced Lutheran pastors and educators, who provided both academic instruction and spiritual encouragement.

For many attendees, the course was not only an opportunity to gain knowledge but also a chance to connect with other women devoted to serving their congregations and communities. The bonds formed during the program fostered a sense of sisterhood and mutual support, inspiring the participants to return to their respective ministries with renewed enthusiasm and purpose.

The Centro de Lutero in Mexico City proved to be an ideal setting for this transformative experience. As a hub for Lutheran education and outreach in Mexico, the center embodies the mission of equipping leaders to share the Gospel and serve others effectively. Its welcoming atmosphere and commitment to nurturing faith created an environment where participants felt valued and empowered.

For the YLM lay leaders, this experience will have a lasting impact on their ministry efforts back home. YLM’s ongoing mission to serve communities in need along the U.S.-Mexico border is rooted in a holistic approach that combines spiritual care with material support. The training these women received will enhance their ability to lead Bible studies, mentor others, and engage in acts of service reflecting the love of Christ.

Through the support of donors who are invested into YLM’s Missions and Education ministries, YLM was able to help cover extra expenses, with the Mexico Lutheran Synod covering traveling and lodging expenses.
