The skills and talents God gave Kathy Meyer, a Diabetic Foot Care Registered Nurse in Minnesota for 27 years, were not just for making a living but also for serving others. This is something Kathy believes strongly, as she dedicates time and resources to Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care (YLM) and serves through Foot Care Clinics. This has been Kathy’s labor of love done for 14 years, in El Paso and Cd. Juarez, when possible.
This year, Kathy made two trips to YLM, back in April and again for the last week of October, bringing along life-time friend Jayne Kurpius and her equipment to do three days of Foot Care Clinics at San Pablo Lutheran Church.
During her time at YLM, she has had the joy of praying with men and women who come to see her, washing their feet, trimming their toenails, checking for sensitivity in the soles, especially for those who have diabetes. She encourages and advice each person the best way to care for their feet, letting them know if there’s a need for them to check in with their doctor.
“My favorite thing is seeing the grateful smiles on their faces, having them “bless me” for doing what I’m doing,” Kathy shared afterwards, “I just love bringing them joy. It isn’t like work at all…I’m just happy that they are happy, and I’m helping them to feel and walk better.”
Her visit in October not only brought her beautiful smile and serving heart, it also brought a truckload of donations, from durable medical equipment to quilts and jackets, as well as other needed items to be distributed through YLM. During her stay, Kathy made a couple of visits to some of San Pablo’s shut-in members, bringing along a walker as well as giving them foot care.
For Kathy, it’s been a blessing to put her skills, talents, and experience at the service of others, sharing an interaction from this past recent visit, “One of the ladies I recently cared for kept sharing with me how I was like Jesus to her, because I was washing her feet as Jesus did.”
