Easter has always been a time of joy and renewal for churches around the world—and this year, San Pablo Lutheran Church in El Paso, TX experienced that joy in a truly special way. Led by the vibrant sounds of Mariachi San Pablo, the Easter celebration brought together music, worship, and the excitement of new beginnings.
Mariachi San Pablo, a ministry of Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care (YLM), has long been a cherished part of San Pablo’s worship life. But this Easter Sunday was particularly meaningful, as it marked the debut of four new members who joined the group just two months earlier. Their presence was the answer to months of prayer and preparation, and their first performance together with the full group was met with heartfelt joy and celebration.
These new additions—Jireh, a 21-year-old university music student from Ciudad Juárez; his 15-year-old sister Johely; and husband-and-wife guitarists Aaron and Nohemi Resendiz—spent weeks attending rehearsals, learning the mariachi repertoire, and forming bonds with the rest of the group. Their dedication was evident, and their enthusiasm contagious. Aaron and Nohemi, already active musicians at Iglesia Luterana Santísima Trinidad, knew just how special this opportunity would be—not only for themselves but also for the young musicians they brought along.
Easter morning began early for Mariachi San Pablo. The group of nine gathered with the congregation at San Pablo’s Easter breakfast, sharing laughter, food, and fellowship. This moment of connection set the tone for what was to come—a worship service filled with vibrant music and unified praise.
As the service began, Mariachi San Pablo led the congregation with joyful hymns and songs celebrating Christ’s resurrection. The energy was unmistakable. People clapped, sang, and even danced in place as the church filled with the rich sound of mariachi-style worship. It was a moment of unity –different ages, different languages, one voice lifted in celebration.
Jireh and Johely’s family, attending San Pablo for the first time, were moved by the bilingual service and the welcoming spirit of the congregation. They joined in the Word and Sacrament, experiencing firsthand the joy flowing from faith expressed in music and community.
For Mariachi San Pablo and the YLM staff, this Easter was a reminder of God’s faithfulness. The prayers for new members, the quiet hope for growth, and the desire to expand this unique ministry were answered in a beautiful way. The new members aren’t just filling spots –they are bringing new life, new sound, and new possibilities to the group.
