This past Saturday, Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care (YLM) once again provided food baskets to people experiencing food insecurity. More than 130 families came through the Food Pantry Drive-Thru, opening trunks and back doors for the food boxes. The best surprise these families received were the 2–3 cartons of eggs each received, a true blessing during this time when egg prices continue to rise and household budgets grow tighter.
There was more than just food shared that morning, however. After receiving their food boxes, each family received a copy of the “Gospel of John” in Spanish. These were generously donated by a member of Zion Lutheran Church, who wanted to offer not only physical support but also spiritual encouragement. Many who received them expressed heartfelt gratitude, not just for the food, but for the words of hope given to them.
The smiles, kind words, and joyful “thank-you” heard during the drive-thru reminded everyone involved why this ministry matters. For some, the eggs meant breakfast for the week. For others, the Gospel booklets offered peace and comfort during uncertain times.
We’re excited to welcome Zion Lutheran Church as a partner in this effort on the third Saturday of March. Their presence and support are a blessing, and we look forward to serving side by side with them in this ongoing work. Together, we keep showing up—for each other, for our neighbors, and for the good work God put in place for us before the foundation of the earth.
YLM’s Food Pantry Drive-Thru is the oldest of its ministries, continuing to serve families in the Lower Valley with consistency and care. It also offers meaningful opportunities for volunteers of all ages. From families and church groups to high school and college students seeking community service hours, this ministry brings people together in a spirit of service and compassion.
