winners_198x149Ministry in the remote farming village of San Lorenzo, Chihuahua, Mexico, began in 1989 when YLM sent a handful of servant event groups to repair and paint a clinic and community center.  Groups then returned annually to complete work projects for the community.  Because of the relationships these groups built with the villagers, they invited YLM to build a church there. Servant events from YLM and the LCMS Texas District CAN-DO Ministry helped construct what would become Iglesia Luterana San Esteban (“St. Stephen”).

Opportunities for worship and education include Bible study/children’s ministry, every other Friday at 3:00 pm (Holy Communion once per month).

Pastor Martin Tovar reports that the children in San Lorenzo’s newfound love is baseball. YLM sent several loads of donated equipment to San Lorenzo with the Tovars in an effort to encourage the Christian camaraderie of a church sponsored baseball team. They ALWAYS ask to play first thing upon he and Blanca’s arrival! Next on their list is an honest-to-goodness baseball diamond. The future major leaguers are apparently planning to be multi-sport athletes, in that they are asking for a basketball court as well!

See below for some breathtaking and inspiring images of an isolated, tiny community filled with children who dream big as they use their athleticism for the glory of an even bigger God.
