Food continues to be a primary need on the border. 285 food baskets are being distributed every Saturday, and because so many family need help, those with ongoing need are limited to receiving food baskets every other week. More than 600 families are receiving food baskets from YLM each month. Food donations plus food we purchase from the West Texas Food Bank (El Pasoans Fighting Hunger) are sorted by volunteers for the weekly distribution. Our hot meal program in El Paso provides food at lunch time Mondays through Fridays.
In Mexico, hot meals are provided on Wednesdays every week at the mission Iglesia de la Santa Biblia (Church of the Holy Bible) in Anapra and on Sundays at Iglesia Luterana Cristo Rey (Christ the King Lutheran Church). Food baskets are distributed in Mexico through our missions and also through city agencies and other non-profit organizations in Mexico that we work with.
Children’s eyes light up as plates of food are served. On Saturday, September 22, 2018, nearly 300 families received food baskets including two women, Juanita and Reyna, who came to YLM from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, for the distribution. “Somos muy agredecidos. Damos gracias a Dios por la ayuda que recibimos aqui. (We are very thankful. We give thanks to God for the help we receive here.)”
