Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care http://ylm.org Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care Tue, 21 Feb 2012 22:33:39 +0000 en hourly 1 They’re Back http://ylm.org/blog/2012/02/21/theyre-back/ http://ylm.org/blog/2012/02/21/theyre-back/#comments Tue, 21 Feb 2012 22:33:39 +0000 chrish http://ylm.org/?p=6096 Once again the snowbirds have returned.  For the fifth year, the RV pads at YLM are full.  Dave & Paige Rohlf, Mike & Marcia Steckelberg, Ivan & Millie Hirsch, and Bob & Kathy Zeek have left their cold and snowy hometowns to spend the spring helping out around the mission.  As usual, they attack any projects with energy and skill.  So far, there has been no shortage of projects for them to accomplish.  They have installed a suspended ceiling in the hallway and library of the office, finished a tiling project in the church, painted walls of the church and office, fixed cracks in the floor, and have recently begun another tiling project, along with numerous other needs that have been thrown at them.  They plan to stay through the middle or end of March.  We are truly blessed to have these servants as part of our family each year.

Well, maybe not new, but a very serviceable and strong 1993 Ford F 250 3/4 ton truck with an extended cab and a long bed.  The truck was given by Mary and Barbara Wilson of Rio Rancho, NM.  Mary’s husband Woody died several years ago.  He had used the truck for his camper. Woody had been very active in his previous Lutheran congregations, becoming friends with his pastors and using his skills as an electrician in his church.

Since Woody’s homegoing, the truck has not been used.  Daughter Barbara started it and drove it occasionally but mostly it just sat in the driveway.  She and Mary had wondered whether to sell it or donate it.  A few mechanical concerns had develped and they didn’t want their truck to cause anyone any problems so they were reluctant to sell it or donate it.  They had seen a note in their church’s newsletter about the need for a truck for mission work at Ysleta but were unsure if theirs would do.

Several people offered to buy it but they hesitated.  When Pastor Donald suggested they might donate it to the Ysleta, they talked about it and decided that’s what they would like to do.  Several volunteers helped get the truck started, safety checked and cleaned up.  These included Robert and Richard Acuna, Jim McRoberts, and Pastor Donald Neidigk.  Jim drove the truck to Ysleta.  It made the 300 mile trip without incident, running well the whole way.

Plans are underway to give the truck a tune up, and send it to Chihuahua City for Pastor Martin Tovar to use on his trips to the Sierra Madre village of Sicachique, where YLM has a mission site and ministers to the local Tarahumara Indians.

Ysleta Lutheran Mission thanks God for the the generosity and mission heart he gave Barbara and Mary Wilson that moved them to donate this wonderful truck for the service of the Gospel.

Erin has now returned to her hometown of St. Louis Missouri, and will begin working at Concordia Publishing House in the multi-lingual department as an assistant marketing manager.  She has already expressed a desire to bring a group from her home church to participate in a servant event this summer, and we look forward to seeing her on her future visits to YLM.

]]> http://ylm.org/blog/2012/01/06/good-luck-and-godspeed-erin/feed/ 0 Sharing Jesus in Anapra http://ylm.org/blog/2012/01/04/sharing-jesus-in-anapra/ http://ylm.org/blog/2012/01/04/sharing-jesus-in-anapra/#comments Wed, 04 Jan 2012 17:54:49 +0000 chrish http://ylm.org/?p=5939 Is the theme of the annual trip of Mayer Lutheran High School in Mayer, MN.  For 7 years now, students, faculty, and chaperons have spent the week over New Year’s sharing Jesus with our friends in Anapra, Juarez.  This year, 25 students and 8 adults made the 26 hour bus ride to YLM, not only to build 3 houses for families from San Lucas, but to spend time sharing the love of Jesus with children and adults alike through stories, crafts, and songs.  There is always a sense of friendly competition to see who can be the first to finish certain aspects of the houses, and the eyes of the children just light up as our mission vans travel the streets of Anapra to get to each work site.  The first day, after the long bus ride, is spent visiting the current year sights, and last year’s families.  This year, even though the sites were several blocks away from last years, many of the children came to spend time with their friends from last year.   Nightly devotions included songs, pictures, and bible readings designed to show the love of Jesus.  It is amazing to see the faith and love come through each year from this group.  We look forward to working with them again as we turn the calendar to 2013.
