A small but mighty group of 6 students and 2 adults from Messiah Lutheran Church in Plano, Texas made the drive across the state to once again serve the El Paso community and our mission. On previous trips, the team has split up and worked on several projects, both on campus and in the community, however this year, they were tasked with building an edition for Luz and her family in Sparks. This project allowed them not only to provide much needed room for the family, but to bring it completion at the end of their week.
The students and their leader quickly attacked the construction project, not letting the heat or rare El Paso humidity distract or slow them down, knowing they wanted to not only complete the addition during their week, but also be able to paint the entire outside. The team bonded both on the work site through contests to see who could name the artist of the next song on the radio first, challenges to who could miss the nail the fewest times, and of course whether the roof team could finish before the insulators. Off the site, devotions, bible studies, and singing with the Cuban refugees still on campus helped to make an international experience for the students and allowed them to grow in faith and friendship.
