During the week of August 6-13, 2011, individuals from across the country spent a week in El Paso learning Spanish…with a Lutheran twist! It was all part of YLMHC/LHMI’s 2nd annual Conversations in Spanish session. The students represented 7 different churches/organizations, and brought goals ranging from doing volunteer work with Hispanic breast cancer patients to managing a construction crew of Hispanic laborers to teaching ESL in South America. The 25 hours of language instruction they received, along with nightly “Songs in Spanish” tutorials and presentations on diverse topics in Hispanic ministry, gave them the tools and the confidence to do that and so much more–share the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ with their brothers and sisters in Christ. Cultural visits to VIVA! El Paso, Mission Trail, Chamizal National Memorial, Pro’s Ranch Market, El Paso Saddleblanket, and Andale enhanced the experience.
One student writes:
“Where can you…
- jump-start your learning of Spanish,
- gain appreciation for the culture & history of El Paso & Mexico,
- consider important features in Hispanic ministry,
- be inspired by the lives of people meeting and serving Christ,
- receive ministry to your spirit in Jesus’ name,
..all while eating VERY well?
Nowhere but Conversations in Spanish…”
Three future sessions have been planned. Marked your calendars now and keep an eye out for more information.
